There is an old wives tale told when Persian families drive on the 5 Freeway. When they pass Kerman, California near Fresno, the False Legend is Told. ‘Kerman was named after Kerman Province in Iran.’ The legend says there was a wealthy landowner from Iran who settled in Central California. This mystery patron is told to have renamed the city, formerly Collis, to Kerman.

But the legend is un-true. Kerman was re-named via two Los Angeles capitalists, William G. Kerckhoff and Jacob Mansar, who combined the first three letters of each of their names and christened the area Kerman.

Kerman sits at the intersection of State Route 180 and State Route 145 in Fresno CountyCaliforniaUnited States. The population was 13,544 at the 2010 census. Kerman is located 15 miles (24 km) west of Fresno.

The Kerman Unified School District is the school district serving Kerman and the surrounding areas.Kerman High School and Kerman Middle School.
