5 Ways to Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

1. Set specific goals with specific dates

When setting goals this year, be very specific. According to Jack Canfield, Don’t just say, “ I want to make more money this year.” But rather, as an example: “ I want to make an extra $10,000 by March 31, 2017, by 5 p.m.” When you have your goals written and by when you want them accomplished, your mind automatically increases its sense of urgency. The reticular activating system in the brain starts thinking about ways to accomplish the goal. The mind starts seeing resources that it didn’t before and creates an environment of maintained urgency.

2. Visualization

When you visualize your goals as if you have already achieved them, your mind and body can’t tell the difference. When you put your mind in a state where your external experiences try to manifest a visual reality that has been built in the subconscious, you start working backwards as if you have already achieved the goal. If your goal is weight loss then visualize your ideal body type. See yourself as if already having manifested that body. Photoshop your face over the perfect image that you want for yourself and look at it three times per day.

3. Be in control of your social media time 

In this modern world of social media it’s easy to check your Facebook and Instagram mutliple times per minute. It is also easy to forget what you were about to Tweet when reading so many other tweets. One way to stay on top of your productivity is to focus on completing a task for 10 minute increments and then reward yourself by checking Facebook or Instagram for one minute. Spend 10 minutes on a task without checking social media, and then after completing the task, reward yourself by checking Facebook or Instagram or sending a Tweet as a one minute break. If working on a longer task, such as studying for an exam or work related paperwork, spend 50 minutes without any distractions, and then reward yourself with a 10 minute social media break.

4. Exercise in the morning

When you wake up in the morning, on an empty stomach, and you exercise, it starts your day with more energy. If you combine the visualization imagery in addition to exercising in the morning your mind and body becomes synergistic to find foods that will fuel. Rather than eating a large breakfast in the morning to satisfy a craving, a morning exercise will make body wanting foods that will continue wanting it to feel brisk throughout the rest of the day.

5. Get out of your comfort zone

T. Harv Eker, best-selling author of “The Millionaire Mind” says, “Comfort is the kiss of death to ultimate success.” Being in your comfort zone means overeating the foods you normally do when you get hungry. It means passively watching TV longer than planned. It means going through the motions. Remember the last time you worked out with a personal trainer and how you felt the next day. Compare that with how you feel after an average, mundane workout. Reaching farther that you think you are capable of is what fuels growth. Growth is what fuels progress towards achievements, that seem otherwise impossible.
