There have only been three Academy Award nominees of Iranian descent. Everyone can name at least one : Shohreh Aghdashloo. She was nominated for Best Supporing Actress for her role in House of Sand and Fog. Asghar Farhadi not only was nominated twice, but is a two-time winner. He won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for A Separation and The Salesman.
There is another Oscar nominee of Iranian descent that has been overlooked : Hossein Amini. He was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Wings of the Dove.
Amini wrote the screenplay for the film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. He also wrote and directed The Two Faces of January starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst. He wrote 47 Ronin. He also co-wrote Snow White and the Huntsman.
We have a feeling he will not be the last person of Iranian descent to be nominated for an Oscar. We have our money on Ramin Djawadi, next.
